Big Planet is a fantastic world populated by an odd assortment of splinter societies, where beauty and evil dwell in uneasy proximity. Glawen Clattuc, scion of one of the scientific houses of Cadwal, must discover who exactly is behind all the sabotage, and bring them to interplanetary justice.

But Glawen soon discovers that he is investigating his own family — there are ancient crimes to be discovered, as well as the key that will resolve the crisis that threatens Cadwal and its way of life.

Was die Geschichte so besonders macht, ist die ungewöhnliche, reichlich anarchische Welt Sirene. Als Leser fibert man mit Edward mit und überlegt, ob man an seiner Stelle bessere Chancen haben würde. Es stehen einfach zu viele Fettnäpfchen bereit und die Strafe (Tod!) kann sehr drastisch ausfallen. Der Detektivteil verleiht dem Ganzen zusätzlich Würze und das nötige Tempo…

Simbolični dodaci koji se koriste radi proširivanja svih vidova ljudske ličnosti su naravno brojni. Odjeća sačinjava najvažniju vrst tih simbola i ponekad je zabavno promatrati, neprimjetno po mogućnosti, odjevne predmete nasumce sakupljene grupe ljudi.

Zamislite da je svaki od tih predmeta izabran s primjernom brigom i isključivom željom da izazove neki točno određen efekt.

Usprkos simboličnoj snazi odjeće, muškarce i žene se u principu ocjenjuje prema okolnostima koje je mnogo teže kontrolirati: držanju, naglasku, boji glasa, obliku i boji njihova tijela, i što je najvažnije po izrazu lica. Glas se, naime, može modulirati, dijetom i treningom dovesti tijelo u društveno prihvatljive oblike (bar teoretski). Međutim što se može učiniti s licem?

Nevjerojatan napor je uložen u tom smjeru. Podbraci se podižu, obrve čupaju ili dodaju, nosovi krate, frču ili ravnaju. Kosu se muči da zauzme jedan od tisuća položaja: ona se kovrča, tapira, moči, suši, vješa na ovaj ili onaj način, a sve da se uobliči slika koja je u skladu s modom. Međutim bez obzira na sve napore, sve te prijetvorbe su prozirne; lažiranje prirode uvijek popušta pred kritičnim okom. Bez obzira na naše sklonosti, da li nam se sviđaju naša lica ili ne, prisiljeni smo živjeti s njima i prihvaćati sve pohvale, ukore ili poruge koje i nehotice izazivamo svojim licem.

To se, naravno, ne odnosi na ovaj neshvatljiv i bistar narod s planeta Sirene, čiji se neortodoksni društveni običaji razmatraju na sljedećim stranicama.

Oděv představuje velmi významnou kategorii těchto symbolů, a když se někdy lidé sejdou, bývá docela zábavné studovat (nenápadně, samozřejmě), jak jsou oblečeni, a zjišťovat, do jaké míry volili tu kterou součást ošacení se záměrem dosáhnout určitého specifického účinu. Přes symbolický význam oblečení se však muži i ženy posuzují z valné části především podle znaků, které se definují mnohem obtížněji — držení těla, přízvuku, zabarvení hlasu, tvaru a barvy těla, a především tváře. Hlas může být modulován, dieta a cvičení dokáží, alespoň teoreticky, zformovat tělo do společensky přijatelných kontur. Co lze provést s obličejem? V tomto směru bylo už vynaloženo enormní úsilí. Tvar čelistí se dá upravit, obočí přidělat nebo odstranit, nos zkrátit, ztupit, narovnat. Vlasy můžeme tvarovat do tisíců různých podob — lze je vyfoukávat, nakrucovat, zvlhčovat, vysušovat či jinak modelovat, jak je komu libo, vždy s cílem dosáhnout módního účinu. Seberafinovanější kamufláž bývá ovšem průhledná a neodolá kritickému oku. Ať podléháme jakýmkoli sklonům, ať se nám naše obličeje líbí, nebo ne, jsme nuceni s nimi žít a chtě nechtě přijímat výhody, omezení i posměšky, které nám přinášejí. Ovšem kromě rafinovaných a inteligentních obyvatel světa zvaného Siréna, o jejichž neortodoxních společenských zvycích se pojednává na následujících stránkách.

Un’allegoria che ha poco da invidiare a Pirandello…

HIDE-AND-GO-SEEK AMONG THE PLANETS

Five bracelets of solid gold-five clues that began an interstellar treasure hunt. And as the luck of the Irish would have it, Paddy Blackthorn found himself the chief hunter-and the chief hunted.

He had only the cryptic messages imprinted in the five armbands so involuntarily left him by the five planetary rulers. He had also the help of a little, black-haired Earther girl to figure out their secrets.

But it was no children's game they were playing. Old Mother Earth, now abandoned by her spawn, foundered on the verge of extinction. Only the treasure Paddy sought would suffice to rescue the home planet-and incidentally to rule the rest of the cosmos.

Far to the south of the swampy middle region and beyond the ken of most of the people of Shant, lay Caraz, the wild continent, peopled by exiles, nomads and slave traders.

Slaves of The Klau by Jack Vance is a short but very intense novel. A lowly, though rebellious human servant to an advanced alien is seized and taken into the most desperate slavery under utterly ruthless masters. His initial attempts at escape turn into an ongoing journey of personal development as his mental strength and power grow to enable him to take command of increasingly complex and hazardous situations.

The story is completely believable and consistent, as the hero fights to overcome setback after setback. It is wonderfully woven between the different personalities of a number of alien races, a highly technological future, and intergalactic war. Very clever ideas, very visual, delightfully written. This is a timeless piece. It has been on my bookshelf for nearly thirty years and has been read many times.

The inhabitants of a planet Iszm, a species known as the Iszic, have evolved the native giant trees into living homes, with all needs and various luxuries supplied by the trees’ own natural growth. The Iszic maintain a jealously guarded monopoly, exporting only enough trees to keep prices high and make a great profit. Ailie Farr, a human botanist, goes to Iszm (like many others before him, of many species) to steal a female tree, which might allow the propagation of the species off world and break the monopoly.
