Set during the 19th century when emigrants were leaving England to settle in Australia, and of a young man, Jim Robbins, who set out on the ship, the , which founded in the estuary of the Thames River. Jim was one of the few survivors of the wreck, and only he knew that the navigational tool, a patent log, was damaged, as he had accidentally done so, and gave incorrect data as to where the ship's position was. How Jim learns to accept his guilt and to reclaim his life is told in a vigorous and compelling story.
