Miles away, in the mist and rain of the Essex marshes, a satanic priest has created a hideous creature. Now it was waiting beneath the ancient stones of Bentford Priory for the virgin sacrifice that would give it life . . .

Revew

Why did the solitary girl leave her rented house on the French Riviera only for short walks at night? Why was she so frightened? Why did animals shrink away from her? The girl herself didn't know, and was certainly not aware of the terrible appointment which had been made for her long ago and was now drawing close.

Molly Fountain, the tough-minded Englishwoman living next door, was determined to find the answer. She sent for a wartime secret service colleague to come and help. What they discovered was horrifying beyond anything they could have imagined.

Dennis Wheatley returned in this book to his black magic theme which he had made so much his own with his famous best seller The Devil Rides Out. In the cumulative shock of its revelations, the use of arcane knowledge, the mounting suspense and acceleration to a fearful climax, he out-does even that earlier achievement. This is, by any standards, a terrific story.

This novel is set in Mexico and recounts the adventures of 'Lucky' Adam Gordon, a young best-selling novelist who has gone to that country in search of background material for a new book, and who soon finds himself in love with the exquisitely beautiful but deeply religious Chela.

Adam's ability to go back in time enables the reader to glimpse the magnificent but barbaric civilisation of ancient Mexico, but this is only part of the story. How Adam becomes entangled with some sinister individuals who are prepared to go to almost any lengths to achieve their evil ambition, how he finds himself continually fraught with danger, caught between two powerful rival factions, and having to participate in revolting pagan rites, is described in this thrilling story by 'The Prince of Thriller-Writers'.

Vendetta in Spain

Readers of and other books in which the glamorous Lucretia-Jose appears with the Duke de Richleau may recall that her parentage was surrounded by mystery. Over the years many people have written, asking for an account of the great romance that led to her birth.

The story takes us back to Spain, in 1906, when the Duke had not yet succeeded his father, and was still the Count de Quesnoy. In these days it is not easy for us to realize that, less than fifty years ago, there was hardly a Monarch or President who could leave his bed in the morning with any certainty that he would live through the day. Anarchism permeated every country in Europe. Not a night passed without groups of fanatics meeting in cellars to plan attempts with knives, pistols or bombs against the representatives of law and order; not a month passed without some royalty or high official falling a victim to their plots.

In Spain, an historic bomb outrage that led to scores of innocent people being killed or injured, gave de Quesnoy ample cause to vow vengeance on the assassins. His attempt to penetrate anarchist circles in Barcelona nearly cost him his life. In San Sebastian, Granada and Cadiz he hunted and was hunted by them in a ruthless vendetta. Only after two years did it end in a final desperate gamble with death.

It is against this background of true history, subtle intrigue, sudden violence, terrorism, blackmail and suspense that there develops the bitter-sweet romance between the gallant young de Quesnoy and the beautiful Condesa Gulia, the wife of a friend he loves and honours. Their frustrated passion leads to a denouement that rivals in surprise and breath-taking effect the outcome of his vendetta against the anarchists.

How is it that during the past hundred years so little interest has been taken in the Devil's activities? The Haunting of Toby Jugg suggests an answer. Woven into a tale of modern love and courage, of intrigue, hypnotism and Satan-worship, it propounds a theory that under a new disguise the Devil is still intensely active–that through his chosen emissaries he is nearer than ever before to achieving victory in his age-old struggle to become, in fact, as well as in name, the Prince of this World.

Here is a novel of Russia under Stalin. In the course of a thrilling story, we learn of the desperate hazards which beset the traveler entering the Soviet Republic upon a secret mission and endeavoring to re-cross the frontier without official papers. In the epicurean Duke de Richleau, the Jewish financier Simon Aron, and the wealthy young American Rex Van Ryn, a modern trinity of devoted friends has been created whose audacious exploits may well compare with those of Dumas’ famous Musketeers. Vivid, exciting, ingenious, it combines high qualities of style with thrilling and provocative narrative.

The Devil Rides Out is the most famous work of a master storyteller, a classic of weird fiction which has been described as 'the best thing of its kind since Dracula' a genuinely frightening tale of devil-worship and sorcery in modern Britain. A group of old friends discover that one of them has been lured into a coven of Satanists. They determine to rescue him - and a beautiful girl employed as a medium. The head of the coven proves to be no charlatan but an Adept of the Dark Arts, able to infiltrate dreams and conjure up fearsome entities. De Richleau fights back with his own knowledge of occultism and ancient lore. A duel ensues between White and Black Magic, Good and Evil used as weapons. Whenever, subsequently, Dennis Wheatley was asked what he really believed about the supernatural, he would just reply 'Don't meddle!' Few readers will need that warning repeated.

Original as ever, Mr. Wheatley has produced a new type of hero in Robbie Grenn, a charming but mentally retarded young man who, owing to an injury when young, has never been to school, and is regarded by his family as almost a moron. Espionage would hardly seem to be his metier, yet, to prove that he is as good as other men, Robbie takes up the challenge that lands him many times in peril of his life. Interwoven with his adventures is the story of his relationship with the lovely Stephanie, the first girl with whom the chronically shy young man has ever had more than a passing acquaintance.

As this is a Wheatley book, we need hardly add that the suspense is acute and the denouement remarkable. And, more unusual, Mr. Wheatley, with his flair for blending the exciting and the informative, has embodied in his narrative some stories from Greek mythology told in strict accordance with the chronicles, yet in an off-beat manner which presents the gods and heroes as human characters involved in tragedies and comedies as grim or humorously bawdy as any put upon the Restoration stage. These are revealingly counterpointed with the story of Robbie. is another certain best-seller which will enthrall Dennis Wheatley's present readership and extend it, for he is still the 'discovery' of new readers all over the world.
