En `El Padrino`, de Mario Puzo, asistimos a la plasmación literaria de una especie de contracultura, la Mafia, según es presentada en la narración, y luego en numerosos libros subsiguientes, series y películas. La Mafia es una sangrienta organización criminal, en aras obviamente de espurias bonanzas económicas e incluso sociales, que de Sicilia y todo el sur de Italia, se trasladó a los Estados Unidos merced a la inmigración, y, especialmente, a la ciudad de Nueva York. Puzo podría presentar tan sólo los aspectos de la trama de la organización -los asesinatos, la corrupción legal, etc- pero, en verdad, exhibe específicamente en la persona del Don, del Padrino, un código peculiar de conducta y de reflexión ante la vida, reprobable y punible, es cierto, pero que causó cierto mentís de admiración en el público lector y cinematográfico, ante el apego, en esencia, a los decaídos valores familiares que muchos creyeron añorar gracias a la saga Corleone. No se trata solamente, pues, de la ficción, claro que basada en sangrientos hechos reales, de un simple comportamiento agresivo y criminal, además de ello, es toda una normativa disidente con la sociedad, a veces contando con ella a veces no.

El Don nace en Sicilia, pero de joven emigra a Nueva York. Puzo nos lo describe con un carácter serio, reservado y, sobretodo, reflexivo. Contrasta la actitud familiar, la campechanía inteligente, con los hechos crueles en su pura desnudez, con los asesinatos y las influencias corruptoras. En efecto, en este relato, el mal no es convencional, no es absolutamente negro, es, si se quiere, aunque nunca banal, sí demasiado humano. El criminal, el delincuente, también tiene sus simplezas y sus actitudes ortodoxas, sociales, acaso bondadosas. Es cariñoso con su familia, de conversación razonable y, en apariencia, amena y nunca amenazante.

Vito Corleone se hace Don, padrino, poco a poco y, como él mismo lo hubiera dicho, igual que si tuviera el destino ya trazado. Se junta con unos mafiosos y, ascendiendo en el respeto del hampa y contando con la inmovilidad de las instituciones, entonces se hace dueño de la familia más importante de la ciudad. Pasan los años y Don Vito es anciano, el novedoso tráfico de drogas requiere nuevos horizontes mentales, nuevos emprendimientos transgresores, y, ante los hampones que bogan por el nuevo negocio, el anticuado Vito se enzarza en una guerra de los bajos fondos que culmina con el asesinato de su propio hijo mayor y el pedido de paz. En la reunión al efecto, aparentemente derrotado, el Don promete que no hará nada contra sus antiguos enemigos. Muere y la venganza, en efecto, la realizará el otro gran carácter de la novela, el hijo menor del padrino: Michael.

Michael podría representar cómo un individuo no puede, muchas veces, separarse de su propio grupo, de su rebaño social y además étnico. En la novela, también en la famosa película de Cóppola, asistimos al camino de Michael Corleone de pacífico joven, fiel a los Estados Unidos, a la obediencia de su sino mafioso y criminal, de cómo debe hacerse cargo de los negocios de la Familia, y ejecutar incluso las venganzas que el Don no había podido hacer para cumplir su palabra. Así la contracultura de la organización permanece, se revitaliza, de generación en generación, de padre a hijo.

Los tiempos narrativos de esta trepidante historia están hábilmente conjugados, mantienen una no linealidad que ayuda al suspenso, al efecto, al golpe teatral de las diversas unidades de la narración que se entrecruzan y sorprenden, retomando o abandonando el hilo relator siempre con destreza. Puzo conocía, además, el ambiente de los italoamericanos. Las vívidas descripciones de Sicilia, de su paisaje y sus gentes, el ambiente de los inmigrantes de Nueva York? todo ello refleja sabidurías vivenciales que son trasladadas a la ficción con acierto, creando no solamente una novela sino un mito.
